Recycling Sludge

As you may remember from our recent blog post, “Dex Embraces Water Recycling,” our company recycles gray water for use on the production floor. Water recycling allows us to reduce our demand on conventional water and takes less of an impact on the environment. In the process of recycling water, we also have to deal with “sludge.”

What is “sludge?” Sludge can be defined as semi-solid, organic and inorganic material left over from industrial waste water. In other words, for us, sludge is simply a waste by-product of mixing, grinding, and polishing concrete. DEX’s intent is to recycle both waste water and sludge.

Our current recycling system collects and traps abrasive mud produced in our concrete production process. First, we separate the sludge from the water. Next, we filter the water and dehydrate the sludge.

The filtered water can be reused internally for the polishing and rinsing down of equipment. The sludge on the other hand, is dried and sent to another company for recycling into road beds. DEX’s sludge recycling process is highly efficient and allows us to prevent our gray water from being washed into local storm drains and waterways.
