CL Music Issue 2010- Spotlighting Atlanta’s Burgeoning Music Scene and the Bands Who Paved the Way for It

June 22, 2010- (Atlanta)- As many Creative Loafing (CL) readers have noticed, their favorite “go-to” entertainment newspaper has undergone some structural changes recently. Some of you may have even celebrated them with us at the “CL Relaunch Party” on Thursday, June 10 of this month. If you did, then thanks. We had fun too!

However, those changes were not the only plans up CL’s sleeves. We now present you with the “CL Music Issue 2010” which will be released on Thursday, June 24. The music issue celebrates Atlanta’s underground and mainstream artists, as well as, its nostalgic and modern music movements. It will feature a compilation of music interviews, photo galleries, and an oral history of the Cabbagetown music scene. It will also feature an “emerging artists” list and a “where are they now?” music feature for the CLATL.com website.

As you probably remember, the first issue since the relaunch featured ATLien, Big Boi, on the cover and discussed his upcoming solo release, Sir Lucious Leftfoot: The Son of Chico Dusty (debuting July 6 on Def Jam). The music issue will feature a nostalgic throwback to the making of Aquemini by Outkast which went double-platinum in 1999 and made it to Rollingstone’s “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.”

In addition to the Aquemini piece, Bradford Cox, of acclaimed bands Deerhunter and Atlas Sound talks about the influence of the late provocateur Benjamin Smoke (aka Ms. Opal Foxx, a pill-popping homosexual drag queen) and front man for Atlanta band Smoke. This issue will also feature a narrative photo essay featuring work from some of Atlanta’s best music photographers. Stay tuned to find out who made the cut.

Music writer Chad Radford said that there will be dynamic artist-on-artist interviews between Philip Frobos of art-rockers Carnivores and Chris Lopez of Cabbagetown’s very own Rock *A* Teens; power-pop king Gentleman Jesse and Coco of indie-surf trio Man or Astroman?; songstress India Arie and veterans the Indigo Girls; and Jared from the psychedelic Black Lips and the very “crunktastic” Waka Flocka Flame.

In addition to a music-packed issue, Creative Loafing will host a “CL Music Issue Party” onSaturday, June 26 at the Star Community Bar in Little Five Points. The party will start at 9 p.m. and feature popular local acts The Howlies and The Coathangers, as well as, up-and-comers Balkans, Mermaids, and Gold Bears. The electric duo of Spencer Garn (Soulphonics) and Mike Carbone (A Fight to the Death) will take over the downstairs little vinyl lounge spinning musical gems and crowd favorites. This indie-rock extravaganza is sure to indulge your auditory appetite.

Why not pony up, exploit, and celebrate the music scene we all know and love?
